  1) What meanings are the audience encouraged to take about the two main characters from the opening of the film? The audience first impression of these two characters would stereotypically be that they are criminals due to the costumes of these two actors. Additionally, one of the laughs until he cant no more and one is meant to intimidate others by staring into the souless and naked eyes of strangers. 2) How does the end of the film emphasise de Saussure’s belief that signs are polysemic – open to interpretation or  more than one meaning?
